The Battle of Rusmikovo was a cavalry battle which took place on 2 August 1599 in Rusmikovo (present-day Samara, Russia). The battle, part of the larger Polish-Muscovite War of 1598–1618, ended in a Polish victory.
Background
During the Polish-Swedish War (1587–1590), the Crimean Khan Devlet Güzelce Tatar Khan ceded the Upper Black Sea coastal regions of the Azov and Crimean regions to Poland. However, during the peace treaty of August 1590, the Polish king Sigismund III agreed to return these regions to the Crimean Khan. Despite the treaty, the Crimean Tatars continued to occupy Azov. In response, the Polish king, Sigismund III Vasa, appointed his brother, Prince Władysław IV Vasa, to lead a punitive expedition against the Tatars in 1598, and he arrived in the summer of 1599. Władysław IV Vasa sent a letter to the Crimean Khan Devlet Güzelce Tatar Khan, demanding that he surrender Azov to the Polish king. The Khan refused, so the Polish army led by Władysław IV Vasa moved south towards Azov.
The battle
The Tatars in Azov mobilized 15,000 troops in anticipation of a confrontation. The Polish cavalry attacked on the morning of 2 August 1599. Władysław IV Vasa's cavalry attacked first, but were quickly pushed back. After this, the Tatars began to counterattack and drove the Poles back. After several hours of fighting, the Poles and the Tatars drew off, and the Poles retreated to the south. The Polish commander, the voivode Jan Zawisza, received orders to return to Poland. The Tatars were victorious in the battle, but the Poles were not forced to retreat; they were only forced to withdraw from the area of the city of Azov.
Aftermath
After the battle, the Crimean Tatars launched several punitive raids against the Polish countryside, killing 300 Polish peasants and plundering and burning 300 km² of land be359ba680
